Use Your Home Computer Like a Web Server With the HomeWeb Service

What is the HomeWeb Service?
The HomeWeb service is a remote communication service that allows you to send commands to your home computer from over the internet.  Instead of logging into your computer remotely and working from a virtual desktop, you define batch-like commands ahead of time and then you can call those commands without logging in.

Uses For The Home Web Service:
Home Users:  Consumers who have basic needs like retrieving files from their computer when they are away from home can use the HomeWeb service for these tasks.

System Administrators:  Users with a need to run administrative operations like backing up databases and restarting services can use the HomeWeb service and define routines to perform these tasks.  Commonly-needed tasks can therefore be run with a discrete remote command - which saves time logging in, etc.

Website Developers:  Developers can delegate certain operations from their existing websites to a private computer behind a firewall.  This is similar to calling a web service against the private computer, although the mechanics are different.

Using the Service:
In order to use the HomeWeb service, you must download and install two free software products from Cognitier, and complete the HomeWeb service signup form.  After your signup information has been reviewed, you will be sent the configuration information that will allow you to connect to the service.  The software products allow your computer to respond to remote commands.

Restrictions:
Please refer to the Terms Of Service.  In particular, you must be 18 years or older to use the service.  Your home computer must run the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Getting Started:
Step 1 (Required):
Download and install either SimpleIPC or SimpleIPC Express.  SimpleIPC Express is the free version of SimpleIPC, and it is adequate for most users.  This is the application which allows you to define and run routines to be executed on your computer.

Step 2 (Optional):  Download and review the SimpleIPC Users Guide.  This document provides information on advanced configuration options for SimpleIPC, as well as more detailed information on defining routines to be run within SimpleIPC.

Step 3 (Required):  Download and review the HomeWeb Service Getting Started Guide.  This document provides information on installing the Messaging Peer service (see below) and configuring your computer for the HomeWeb service.

Step 4 (Required):  Download and install the Messaging Peer For PHP.  The Messaging Peer is a Windows service that routes external commands to your computer.

Step 5 (Required for 64-bit Windows):  Download and apply the manual registry entry changes if your computer is running a 64-bit version of Windows.  Download the file, unzip it, and double-click on it to apply the registry changes.

Step 6 (Required):  Complete the HomeWeb service signup form.  Your signup information will be manually reviewed, and so your account will not be immediately activated.

Step 7 (Required):  Upon receiving your welcome letter from Cognitier via email, complete the configuration of the Messaging Peer on your computer in accordance with the instructions in the HomeWeb Service Getting Started Guide.
